"Gay people have every right to regard the [LDS] church hierarchy as a mortal enemy." - Andrew Sullivan |
|||
On election day, November 4, 2008, Californians voted to remove the right of gay people to marry - something their Supreme Court had said was legal many months before. This was done by a ballot initiative, called "Proposition 8." Tens of thousands of Americans found themselves suddenly without a right they had the day before. The rule of law was replaced by the tyranny of the bigoted majority. The LDS Church, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, is widely credited with the success of Proposition 8. The LDS Church officially urged its members to contribute both time and money towards its passage, and used church funds to pay the salaries of church leadership and administrators who were engaged in political influence (see Evidence.) It's rare in America when rights are removed from people. The LDS Church did just that - rather ironic, given the LDS Church's history. Ex-Mormons, Reform Mormons, members of the LDS Church itself, and non-Mormons want to let the people of California - especially all the gay people there - know that we're sorry this happened and that we feel the LDS Church has behaved shamefully. We're not trying to defend ourselves - we're trying to say "we're sorry" that other Mormons have done this, and that we'll work to reverse this injustice. |

| You CAN do something about this! Please take each step: |
||||||
| Boycott the LDS Church. Don't listen to their missionaries, don't go to their Visitors Centers, don't attend their events and pageants. | ||||||
| Boycott LDS-owned businesses - owners give 10% of what they make to the LDS Church. | ||||||
| Don't visit the Hate State- there's nothing in Utah you can't get elsewhere, and the LDS Church dominates everything about Utah. | ||||||
| Write a letter of complaint. Let them know how you feel. Address it to: Thomas Monson, 50 E. North Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah 84150. | ||||||
| Explain to your friends what the LDS Church has done, so they can avoid LDS missionaries and businesses, too. | ||||||
| Contribute to organizations that are trying to reverse Prop 8: Invalidate Prop 8, the ACLU, Lambda Legal. | ||||||
| Sign petitions and/or resign: remove LDS tax-exempt status, Mormons Stole Our Rights.com, Sign For Something | ||||||
| Protest. The LDS didn't think pro-gay people would retaliate.They were wrong. Most Mormons marry in their temples on Saturdays - an excellent day to protest at your local LDS temple. | ||||||
| Send us your photo in support of those who have been wronged by Prop 8. | ||||||
| Not all members of the LDS Church supported Prop 8. Also, there are many
Mormons who are not part of the LDS Church, who support gay rights. So,
our actions are reserved for those people who propagate hate, including
the hierarchy of the LDS Church. "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." - Thomas Jefferson See also: Reform Mormonism Stop The Mormons |
